Weekend with Pop and Mop

When Bruce decided to go to the SEC tournament (we won't mention how his team performed... nor will I gloat about how my team excelled...;), I thought, "let's take a road trip to Jackson, TN to see family!"  Since we are on staff at the church, we are always at home on Easter Sunday - so it was wonderful to have a family weekend a few weeks early.  Bruce left on Thursday and I had the car packed and ready to go - the kids and I left Friday afternoon as soon as I got home from work.  We stopped in Grenada and picked up Papaw... donned in our Kentucky gear...

We arrived about 7:30 that night and had more fun than you can imagine!  Silas and Avery couldn't get enough of Poppy playing in the floor with them all weekend:

The weather was beautiful and we found time to play at the park close to their house!
This is good:

Oh, and sweet Eleanor was with us too!  Micajah and Grace were hosting an engagement party in Nashville that weekend so Mom was keeping Eleanor. She loved playing with the big kids.

Get ready... this is too much.
Everybody loves Pop's pool... (except Silas. Poor buddy just likes to watch. Maybe next visit.)

Jack and Silas (born 2 days apart!)... such fun with cousins (and Avery and Kaelyn are in the corner of the frame:

The next few are from the Zippity Doo Dah weekend in Fondren... the kids enjoyed seeing the big Clydesdale horses up close at the Wednesday night preview!

A League of Their Own

With the warmer days of late and (finally!) Daylight Savings Time, us Warfs have spent as much time outdoors as possible...

Sweet Silas and Avery love to pick Mommy "flowers"... Sadly, these are the only flowers Mommy can grow...
(and yes, we make necklaces and bracelets and even belts and hula hoops out of them:-)

These two are a hoot... even at bedtime... here they are cheering in celebration of Ole Miss stellar Signing Day:

Avery likes to do the wave....

And she likes to model a dress... any dress... Miss Hollywood. (the picture is blurry for obvious reasons)

I saw this on social media one day and decided to save it for (MANY) years down the road.  It reminds me of my Daddy and his incidental timing of 'cleaning his rifles' when my dates would arrive to pick me up...

Recent Pictures

My little buddy is our band groupie and loves going to sound check early on Sunday mornings... he thinks he is big stuff!  He always sets (re-sets) my in-ear system and helps Mr. Tommy play the bass. Here is that cool dude himself:

Silas might come across as more "reserved" or "quiet"... but this cool dude has a wit of his own...  see exhibit A below.  This is how we ate Chinese at dinner a few weekends ago.

Meanwhile, he's got a sister who knows she's hot stuff! Here's Hollywood herself:

We have been so fortunate that illnesses have been minimal over the last 2 1/2 years... Silas and Avery both caught the 'rotovirus' a few weeks ago - (another reason I'm so behind in blogging...)  But not even Roto could keep Avery from her chips and "guac"! She (in true Gore legacy) correctly believes chips are just a vessel for the good stuff:-)

Meanwhile, Silas still loves his cake.

And his dog.

SilasandAvery-isms...

I love this one... (and LOVE the other little one in the back making a face in the window:-)...

Oh, and can you tell who dressed them?  :-)

Just relaxing (and always posing).

Happy boy with his 'books' (and after chocolate - as seen on his lips)...

Funny SilasandAvery-anisms:
1.  On Perspective.  Silas and Avery received Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head with all the 'fixings' for Christmas (thanks cousin Philpots!) and love playing with them these days.  Only Avery likes to make sure the hair and eyes with lashes and lips are in the right place and "match" while Silas pulls out a cookie sheet from Mommy's cabinet for the potato to "sit" on. That boy is ready to cook that potato!  Bahahaha.
2.  On Books:  They are both into books like never before and must even sleep with their books in their beds.  "My book, my book, my book......"  Silas likes to have me read the book to him and, as one might imagine, Avery prefers to read to everyone else in the room.  In Avery-ese.
3.  On Cleanliness:  Both love washing their hands and sometimes get dirty just so they can stand on their stools and "wash, wash."  Oh, and Silas now takes baths.  Praise God. Now if I could just get Avery out of the bathtub.
4.  On Singing:  Karaoke is the big thing these days.  Silas still loves his guitars and piano (Avery prefers jumping off the piano and twirling like a "princess" while singing).
5.  On Potty Training:  oh, wait.  Not happening.  Geesh. I guess sooner or later everyone learns, right?

Bienvenido de Miami!

Mom, Grace and I spent the weekend celebrating life and wellness at Canyon Ranch in Miami, FL.  It was a total splurge, but worth every penny... and we've decided to make the girls weekend getaway a yearly thing (on a smaller scale in future years, of course).  We flew out Friday afternoon and arrived that night to plush slippers, robes, and chocolates on our pillows... oh, and a view of the Atlantic Ocean.  My, my, we were living it up!  We spent some time on the beach Saturday and shopped in Miami Beach that afternoon before dinner. Sunday was "spa day" as all three of us were pampered all afternoon.  Monday, before we left, we were able to drive to Coral Gables and see University of Miami, where Mom spent some time in grad school.  She's always wanted to go back to walk on that campus and I'm so glad we were able to do that with her!

What a great weekend celebrating wellness!

Meanwhile, at Daddy Day (and night) Camp:

Bruce did show me that teeth were brushed at least once over the weekend...

Just kidding - Bruce did a fantastic job by himself with them all weekend.  They were greatly missed!

Thankful ... And What Exactly is "Right"?

Again, we are so thankful... for a great report from doctors!  My CT scans showed no evidence of any cancer and the few biopsies they took came back negative. Woohoo!  We go back in three months.  And four days after Bruce and I were there, Mom and Dad went for her 4-month scans - which were great!  On Monday, Feb 4th, she will be 8 years out from her big surgery - Praise God!  A funny aside:  I was a little miffed at Bruce on the way home as I blamed him for leaving my half-read Garden and Gun magazine in the hotel room... then received a message from my Dad when they were in the CT scan waiting room four days later: "picked up a Garden and Gun magazine to read while we wait... and it belongs to YOU".  haha!  Glad that was solved.  Sorry, Bruce. :-)

Silas and Avery are hilarious.  When they get upset if they can't find something (i.e. their juice cup, snack, etc), I tell them to look for it and find it.  They each then take off in opposite directions as if they were Jack Bauer or James Bond and yell for wanted object: "Juice, where are you?!" Cracks me up every time.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of hearing Supreme Court Justice Scalia at the annual Men's Ministry event Hawgs and Horns (Bruce is in charge of it and it is not all men:-).  What an intelligent, insightful, deliberate, educated, wise person he must be.  I told someone that I was excited to be there, listening to him address 1,000 people... but we all knew exactly what (or what he would not) say.  He did a fantastic job talking about the Church and State and made some excellent points, some that I agreed with, some that I did not. Overall, he was right: Christ commanded us several times to obey (and Justice Scalia used a good bit of scripture in his lecture), as Ms Eve proved hard to do in the garden.  I sat there, though, thinking how much I'd love to have lunch with him and pick his big brain.  Or, better yet, I'd love to listen to he and my dad discuss a few things;-)

On that note, with all the second amendment talk on the news these days (see D.O.D post HERE) (and if you aren't familiar with Dear Old Dad, enjoy perusing through some fantastic posts and hilarious conversations between my sister and my DOD), there's a lot to talk about.  Basically, the tragedies that spurred on much of this talk have occurred for decades - well, for centuries.  As time marches on and Israel remains under fire, we Americans seem to be more concerned with limiting our control as citizens all the while choosing to forget our commitment to Israel. Have we become that self-concerning that we begin to ignore our commitments from long ago?  When we read writings of the wise Samuel Adams, George Washington, George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Jefferson, and so many others... we see they battled the same convictions and challenges 250 years ago as we do today.  What foresight and wisdom these men had!

It got me thinking:  Some things just doesn't fit. Don't seem right.

I read a daily devotional by David Jeremiah with this theme and it got me thinking again: (and I elaborate)
Silas and Avery have a toy in which one must find the right shape to put into the little elephant before you can crank it's tail and it spits the shape back out.  As the adage goes:  You can't put a square peg into a round hole.  Yes, how true.  The things of this world will never be "right".  If so, why would we look forward to Heaven!  The things here simply do not look like God. i.e., world hunger, school shootings, lying politicians, lying neighbors, human trafficking.  Another aside:  Did you know that this weekend (Super Bowl) is commonly known as the single largest human trafficking incident in the United States?  (SOURCE) So, while we all laugh at funny over-priced commercials, literally hundreds of children and young women become vulnerable to evidence of our moral decay and won't be laughing.  All this to say, again, the things of this world do not look like God.

We talk about big government, global crises, theorizing about what is "right".... and trust me, I'm a believer that a little healthy banter is good for you (or so I was taught by the plethora of vocal, opinionated attorneys in my family!). But... how do we change ONE?  Looking at the big picture is quite dismal and overwhelming... literally depressing.  Doesn't change start with one person?  I think several scholars are credited with that quote.  Just think about Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, Paul... or Stalin, Hitler, or Reagan, or even Jim Elliot.  Does everything we say point others to Christ? Or away from Christ?  It's all about the individual person:  He sings with joy when a person believes (Zeph. 3:17).

Everyone has had people of influence in their life, whether good or bad - there are moments each of us will never forget, people we will never forget... people who have said things or done things that help mold our hearts to what we are today. Was it a teacher, a coach, a parent, a friend, a mentor, someone you don't even know?  I have several of these in my life - some of whom know who they are and some don't have any idea what an impact they've made on my life. We can talk about the "big" things all we want, but our big theories about what is "right" don't concern our Lord. Instead, what are we to focus on?  "...to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world..." (James 1:27)

Let's not miss the big beautiful trees (or the saplings!) for the forest.

Ultimately, He wins.

(Can you tell being off the interferon keeps me awake at night? ha. )

Ski Mississippi 2013

Thursday, January 17th, 2013 ...  SNOW!  Not the customary once a year "Mississippi" slush/ice, but huge fluffy snowflakes fell to create 3 inches of beautiful powder!  Silas and Avery awoke and couldn't WAIT to get out to check things out.  What a fun time had by all!

The Growing Staircase

Christmas with the Koonce's 2013

For the past 3 years, we've added several faces to the staircase picture...
(you know, the tripod and self-timer that takes 10 pictures makes getting a good picture of everyone a little easier...)

And... this year will be no different... Grace and Micajah are having another baby!!
